Watch this space for news about the Contact Improv Festival and special events. There were five Philadelphia contact improv festivals from 1999 to 2003. In 2003, the last day of the festival was cancelled due to a blizard, and we did not get organized to run one in 2004 or 2005. The next one was in 2006. Contact Improv is a movement form where dancers move to follow the play of touch. Gravity and the floor are constant partners. Human touch unites the forces that act upon the body with the sensations they produce withing the body. (Steve Paxton)
Contact Improv draws from post-modern dance, aikido, and couple dances like tango and waltz. Duets are common, but solos and small groups often mix in. Most often the dance is a capella, without music. But sometimes improvised music plays back and forth with the dancers. Contact Improv has no gender roles. All dancers, with experience, flow easily from gentle rolls on the floor to lifting and flying. Here are some photos to give you a clearer view. The best way to experience contact improvisation is to join a class or a jam! (ref: Jim Davis, Andrew Harwood)
